Featured Project
Craft Road Widening
Transportation
DeSoto County, Mississippi
Waggoner provided planning, design, and construction engineering and inspection (CE&I) services for the widening of Craft Road in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Craft Road was an existing two-lane open shoulder roadway that was transformed into a five-lane roadway complete with curb, gutter, sidewalk, and associated drainage improvements.
During peak hours, the former two-lane section of Craft Road created a bottleneck. This project aimed to increase the travelway to meet peak demands, increased by a nearby K-12 school campus, and prepare for anticipated residential growth. The solution was to remove the bottleneck by widening the two-lane roadway to an urban, five-lane roadway.
A complimentary feature of the project was the replacement of a single cell 10’x10′ box bridge with a double 14’x10′ box bridge to reduce flood levels upstream of Craft Road. This element of work was a joint effort through the Local System Bridge Program (LSBP) of the Mississippi Office of State Aid Road Construction with the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors being the local sponsor.

Lewisburg, MS
Craft Road runs past the K-12 campuses of Lewisburg, Mississippi elementary, middle and high schools.
Extras Included
Sidewalks and solar pedestrian crossings were not an amenity initially included in the project. However, the Waggoner team proposed the addition of these elements to serve the school campus and surrounding residents, thereby providing a safer route for school children and parents. The Board of Supervisors approved, and these features now benefit the local community.
Completion Date
The project was completed in time for the school year to begin in August 2022.
