Bear Creek Watershed Plan –  Environmental Assessment

Madison County, Mississippi

Waggoner is preparing a Watershed Plan – Environmental Assessment (Plan-EA) for the Bear Creek watershed in Madison County, Mississippi. The purpose of the Plan-EA is to develop and analyze the effects of watershed project plan alternatives on the natural and human environment. The Plan-EA will be prepared through consultation with the US Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Mississippi Soil and Water Conservation Commission, and the local project sponsor, the Madison County Board of Supervisors.

Total inches of rain that fell in 24 hours, categorized as a 50-year storm

Background

The Bear Creek watershed in Madison County has been recently hit by high intensity rainfall events that have resulted in widespread flooding of infrastructure.

On August 2, 2022, the city of Canton was affected by the 50-year annual exceedance probability storm (50-year storm) when approximately 8 inches of rain fell in 24 hours. This event led to high water rescues and flood damage to homes and businesses.

The extent and recurrence of these type of flooding events have led the community to adopt a watershed-level approach to flood damage prevention.

The project timeline, including completion of environmental assessment, design, and construction is approximately 3-5 years.
