MDEQ Dam Safety Inundation Mapping

Waggoner was contracted by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to perform dam breach analysis for identified high-hazard dams in the State and to develop inundation maps based on the results of the breach analysis. The Waggoner team collected dam information and developed a two-dimensional HEC-RAS hydraulic model to perform breach analysis for each dam. The inundation map was then developed for each dam to show the inundation boundary with the location of homes, structures, roads and facilities that a dam failure could impact.

Emergency Evacuation Routes
Waggoner also showed all road overtopping and specific depths to indicate which roads would be impassible if dams failed, then identified emergency evacuation routes given that information.
Completion Date
The initiative was completed in 2022, with 53 high-hazard dams examined.
