Cat Island Restoration – East & West

Watershed/Coastal
Plaquemines Parish Government
Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana

Waggoner provided preliminary coastal engineering design to support the permitting process for the reconstruction and restoration of Cat Island, off the Gulf Coast in Louisiana’s Plaquemines Parish. The 2017 work involved the design of breakwaters around the island, stabilization of the breach across the southern part of the island, and biological characterization of the island’s wildlife.

Several breakwater configurations were considered and evaluated, including engineered reef solutions that could provide the necessary breakwater protection and additional benefits of increased habitat and biodiversity.

Design alternatives were evaluated with respect to cost, sustainability, resiliency, environmental benefits, and their integration into the overall island restoration (Phase II) permanent design.
